Geonkhali, across the river from Gadiara, is one of the neighbouring bank settlements visible from the Gadiara embankment. A short ferry ride connects the two. From Geonkhali, one can proceed to Mahishadal town in Haldia subdivision, home to the Mahishadal Rajbari: the palace of the Mahishadal royal family, a large and architecturally impressive estate that is one of the better-preserved examples of Bengali zamindari (landlord) architecture in the region. The palace complex includes ornate buildings, courtyards and the evidence of a wealthy, culturally active aristocratic household. It is a worthwhile half-day addition to a Gadiara stay for visitors with historical or architectural interests.
