India's first research centre dedicated exclusively to the life, work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya is a quiet, serious and deeply interesting institution. It houses five galleries and a library containing over 800 rare photographs of Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and other figures of the Indian freedom movement, alongside personal articles, letters and documents associated with Gandhi himself. A study centre makes this an active research institution, not merely a display museum. Give yourself at least 90 minutes here. The collection rewards unhurried attention and provides context for everything else you will see in Barrackpore.
