One of Barrackpore's most spiritually charged spots, Gandhi Ghat is a riverside memorial built over a portion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes. The memorial chamber contains a detailed and moving mural depicting the key moments of Gandhi’s life and his multiple visits to Barrackpore. The ghat itself, a flight of broad stone steps descending to the Hooghly, frames one of the finest sunrises and sunsets in the region, as the light plays across the water towards the old buildings of Serampore on the far bank. Go early in the morning if you can: the river is misty, the atmosphere is ethereal and you are likely to have the ghat largely to yourself. Note that photography inside the memorial chamber is restricted out of respect.
