Chatakpur sits within the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, a compact 38.6-square-kilometre block of natural and managed forest that ranges in elevation from 1,500m at its lower edges to over 2,600m at its heights. The sanctuary is one of the oldest in India, established in 1915, and forms the primary drinking water catchment for Darjeeling town via the Senchal Lakes. The biodiversity rewards patient observers enormously.
