Jagadhatri Puja: Krishnanagar's Crowning Festival
If your itinerary allows for one major festival experience in Krishnanagar, time your visit for Jagaddhatri Puja. Celebrated in the Bengali month of Kartik, after Durga Puja, it is the city’s signature public festival and one of the observances most strongly associated with the legacy of Raja Krishnachandra. Official district sources state that the puja was started in Krishnanagar by Raja Krishnachandra Roy during the 18th century, though the precise details of its earliest celebration belong as much to local tradition as to documented history.
The festival’s local origin story is deeply woven into Krishnanagar’s historical memory. Popular tradition links it to Raja Krishnachandra’s delayed return home after the Durga Puja season had passed, prompting the first celebration of Jagaddhatri in the town. Whether read as history, legend or a mixture of both, the story remains central to the way Krishnanagar understands the festival today.
Today, the streets of Krishnanagar are lined with illuminated tableaux, floats, music and the throng of lakhs of pilgrims and visitors. The immersion procession on the final day fills the city with sound, colour and emotion. Rituals such as sindur khela belong to the farewell observances surrounding immersion, but are distinct from the immersion procession itself.
