The dense Sal forests surrounding Jhargram are the town's greatest asset. The forests are home to elephants, deer, wild boar, and if you're lucky, leopards. Early morning walks reveal a symphony of bird calls, with over 100 species recorded in the area. Elephants are the headline presence here: majestic, unpredictable, and best respected from a distance. Treat any wildlife encounter as a privilege, not a promise: keep to approved routes, avoid late-evening forest drives, and let trained locals read the landscape for you.
Don’t miss the Jungle Mahal Zoological Park (often still called the “deer park” locally): established as a deer park in 1980 and later expanded into a medium-category zoo, it remains an easy, family-friendly way to see the region’s fauna up close before you head deeper into the forests. Hours: 9am-5pm, closed Thursdays.
