The Durgapur Steel Plant, operational since 1959, is the city's raison d'ĂȘtre. It is a massive industrial area that encompasses blast furnaces, rolling mills, and coke ovens dedicated to steel production. Built with British technical collaboration under the Second Five-Year Plan, it is now one of India's major integrated steel plants under SAIL and specialises in alloy steels and forged railway wheels. The full plant is operational and heavily restricted, but the visitor area and viewpoints near the perimeter offer a dramatic industrial tableau: cooling towers steaming against the sky, molten metal glowing in the distance, and the sheer scale of the infrastructure is humbling. Equally fascinating is the adjacent DSP Township, a relic of Cold War-era urban planning. It features wide, planned roads, British-era bungalows, company clubs, and well-maintained parks, making it as interesting as the plant itself.
Traveller's Tip: Formal plant visits require prior permission. Contact SAIL's DSP public relations office in advance if you wish to enter the visitor area. Even a drive through the township's perimeter roads is worthwhile.
