Diamond Harbour Lighthouse

The old lighthouse stands near the Chingrikhali Fort ruins and remains functional, guiding river traffic through the treacherous bend and its associated sandbars. The structure is a distinctive landmark on the riverscape, visible from the promenade and from boats on the river. It was built in the colonial era (some accounts date it to the early twentieth century) and is managed by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships. Climbing to the top is not routinely offered to tourists, but the lighthouse is worth visiting for its context: standing beside it and looking out at the sweep of the river makes tangible just why this bend demanded a navigational beacon in the first place.
