Bengal's highest peak (3,636 metres), located at the edge of the Singalila National Park, offers sunrise views that rival Tiger Hill's. From Sandakphu's famous Sunrise Point, five of the world's greatest peaks unfold before you: Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu, whilst the India-Nepal border stretches below. Sandakphu-Phalut is also a popular trekking destination for tourists wanting a glimpse of over 600 species of orchids, rhododendron and silver fir forests and lots of birds apart from the spectacular sunrises.

  • How to Get There: It is about a 4-5 hour drive from New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP) to the Maneybhanjan base, from where the trekking trail can be accessed. Four-wheel drives are easily available from NJP and even Darjeeling. One can take a flight to the Bagdogra airport and then opt for buses or cabs to reach Sandakphu. Bus services are also available from Siliguri to Maneybhanjan via Sukhiapokhri.
  • Where to Stay: Sandakphu Trekkers Hut, Sandakphu Rest Shed (PWD Bungalow) — both Government of West Bengal initiatives — promise comfortable stays.
  • Best time to visit: Mid-October to December and mid-February to April. Around April, the surrounding meadows start blossoming, making it a perfect time to make the trek.
