While nearby Bandel hosted the Portuguese, Bansberia was the proud stronghold of the Datta Roy zamindars. Traces of this feudal era persist in the ruined fragments of the Dattaray Palace, situated in the vicinity of the temples. Built by the same family that commissioned the terracotta shrines, the structures are in an advanced state of picturesque decay: bougainvillea cascades over crumbling brick walls and broken arches lie quietly in the undergrowth. While largely unmaintained and lacking formal access, a walk around the temple precinct reveals these silent, moss-draped remnants of Bansberia’s 17th-century zamindari grandeur.
