The Damodar River, which has shaped the agricultural fortunes of this district for millennia, runs along the southern edge of town. The Krishak Setu bridge (built 1978) crosses the river about 2.5km from the town entrance and connects Bardhaman to Bankura and Arambag beyond. The sandy riverbanks at the approach to the bridge are a popular local picnic destination in winter, when the river is low and broad sandflats emerge. There is no formal tourist infrastructure here. Early morning visitors may share the banks with fishermen and migratory birds and the view downriver at dawn is one of those quiet, unhurried pleasures that travel guides too rarely celebrate. A cable-stayed railway overbridge near Bardhaman, inaugurated in 2019 and described as the second-largest of its kind in India, is a modern addition to the town’s visual character and worth a look if you pass that way.
