Cross Hill

About 1.5km from the bazaar, off the Reshi road, Cross Hill takes its name from the large Christian cross erected here in 1882 by Fr. Augustine Desgodins in memory of the missionaries lost to Tibet. It has become a place of quiet pilgrimage for local Christians and is believed by many to have miraculous properties.
What brings most visitors here, however, is not the cross itself but the view. Cross Hill sits at a natural vantage point from which, on a clear day, you can see directly into Tibet, or rather into what is now the People's Republic of China, and follow on the same sight line the ancient trade route over the Jelep La Pass. It is also a celebrated sunset point, the sky behind the Himalayan ridgeline turning to fire while the cross stands in silhouette against the glow.
