The stretch on the EM Bypass shines with Christmas cheer
A stretch of the EM Bypass near Patuli — on the southern fringes of the city — comes alive during Christmas week when a 100m section gets transformed into a glowing festive promenade.
Although Kolkatans by the hundreds swear by Park Street and make their annual pilgrimage to soak in the Christmas spirit and year-end celebrations, Patuli, with its lit-up replica of the Howrah bridge, street intersections and median dividers aglow with fairy lights, holds its own.
Strings of twinkling lights, cheerful Christmas-themed cut-outs of Santa Claus and snowmen and the constant buzz of people turn the 'Patuli Walking Street' into a year-end attraction that is both lively and welcoming. With free parking for cars and a broad pavement with park benches, the area is a top draw for families, friends and visitors alike.
Adding to the charm are the bustling food stalls lining the walkway, filling the air with tempting aromas. From steaming cups of tea and coffee to a variety of kebabs and other quick bites, the stalls have it all.
These eateries and the benches surrounding them become hangout zones for people of all ages to eat, sip tasty beverages and enjoy relaxed adda sessions under the festive lights.
The stretch is also a photographer’s delight. Multiple Christmassy installations have been placed on the pavement, turning the spots into perfect photo booths — zones for clicking selfies and group shots, which capture moments of joy against a sparkling Christmas canvas.
The street, which has been lit up as part of the Christmas and year-end celebrations by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, will remain shining till the first week of January.
