The broad, sun-warmed pebble bars of the Raimatangkhola are among the finest butterfly habitats in the Dooars. Throughout winter and spring, the riverbed serves as a vibrant setting for thousands of butterflies. They can be seen engaging in various activities: gathering on mineral-rich wet sand to puddle, soaking up the sun while basking on flat stones, and gently spiraling in slow drifts above the water. The concentration can be extraordinary. Visitors have reported patches of several hundred individuals in an area the size of a living room.
