At Bara-Mitra-Para in Kalna stands the oldest Buddhist temple in Purba Bardhaman district. A small Theravada Buddhist community (Barua) maintains the temple and the two main idols within it: a six-foot gold-plated metallic Buddha brought from Thailand and an older marble Buddha originating from Burma. It is a quiet and contemplative place, visited by relatively few tourists, and provides a striking reminder that Kalna’s religious landscape encompasses far more than Hinduism.
