Chatakpur is a genuinely excellent birding destination, drawing enthusiasts from across India for its combination of altitude, habitat diversity and relatively undisturbed forest. Among the species regularly recorded in the sanctuary and surrounding areas are the dazzling Red-billed Blue Magpie, Verditer Flycatcher, Bulbul species, Long-tailed Shrike, Warblers, Prinias, Tickell's Golden-backed Woodpecker, Large Yellow-naped Woodpecker, Emerald Cuckoo, Black-backed Kaleej Pheasant, Red Junglefowl, Hornbills and multiple sunbird and thrush species. Early mornings, particularly the hour after dawn, are by far the most productive time, and the trail to Kali Pokhri doubles as an excellent birding transect.
