A short walk from the monument brings you to the banks of the Bhagirathi (a distributary of the Ganges and tributary of the Hooghly). In 1757, this was the tactical anchor of the entire engagement with both armies positioning themselves with respect to the river. Today, the riverbank offers wide views, occasional country boats and an almost meditative calm. In winter, migratory birds work the shallows. At dusk, the light over the water takes on the amber quality of old paintings and it is genuinely easy to imagine the chaos that once played out across this landscape. Early morning is the best time.
