The Bazaar Lanes

The approach lanes to the Furfura Sharif complex are among the most evocative spaces in the district: narrow, shaded by awnings and the upper storeys of old buildings, lined on both sides with shops selling the full range of devotional goods associated with Sufi shrine culture. The range and visual richness of the merchandise deserves a slow, observant walk before entering the complex proper.
Chadars and shrine cloths hang in swags of green, gold, and red from every shopfront. Attar (concentrated perfume oils), rose, jasmine, oud, amber, musk, are sold in tiny glass vials and large bottles from vendors who will offer samples on strips of card. Dried rose petals and fresh flower garlands are sold by the basketful for offering at the tomb. Prayer beads (tasbih) in wood, stone, and plastic; framed calligraphy of Quranic verses and the names of the peer and the Prophet; small booklets containing prayers, the peer's teachings, and devotional poems; recordings of qawwali on cassette and CD; and the green-and-white chequered head coverings worn by male devotees of the silsila are all readily available.
The bazaar is not primarily oriented toward non-Muslim visitors, and the vendors will not generally approach you with tourist-trade persistence. Browse freely, express interest honestly, and purchase what genuinely appeals to you. Attar in particular makes an excellent gift and is of genuinely high quality at the better stalls.
