When: Holi (usually March), on Falgun Purnima (full moon day)
Tagore's unique celebration of spring, combining Holi festivities with cultural performances. Students and locals dress in vibrant yellow and orange outfits, performing Tagore's spring-themed songs and dances at Mela Prangan before engaging in traditional colour-throwing.
Highlights:
- Morning cultural programme featuring Rabindrasangeet
- Traditional Holi celebrations with coloured powders (abir)
- The entire campus blooms with palash (flame of the forest) flowers
- Spontaneous dance and music performances
- Distinctly non-commercialised, artistic interpretation of Holi
Note: In recent years, Visva-Bharati has sometimes restricted outsider entry and/or limited ‘playing with colours’ on campus. If you’re planning specifically for Basanta Utsav, check the latest university/district advisories close to your travel dates.
