Access typically restricted; exterior and grounds visible on heritage tours
Once the principal summer retreat of Bengal’s Governor-Generals, the Government House at Barrackpore was a gracious colonial mansion set in extensive parklands. The adjoining grounds eventually became the Jawaharkunja Park (also called Barrackpore Park), which today preserves a number of interesting relics: the Aviary Pond, the Minto Fountain (a decorative 19th-century water feature) and a set of Nissen huts from World War II, now restored and open as a heritage exhibit. The park is a pleasant green space for a stroll, particularly in the cooler months.
